George E. TOTTEN is a Research Professor at Portland State University. A fellow of ASM International and SAE International, Dr. Totten has served on the ASM Heat Treating Society Board and was president of IFHTSE (International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering) from 2002-2004. He has numerous publications including over 400 papers, book chapters, books and conference proceedings including: Handbook of Quenchants and Quenching Technology, Handbook of Residual Stress and Deformation of Steel, Handbook of Heat Treatment of Steel, Handbook of Aluminum, Handbook of Metallurgical Process Design and others.

Kiyoshi FUNATANI is a Consultant in Nagoya, Japan with a 40-year history in heat treatment research. A member of ASM International since 1969, he has served as an editorial member of various technical committees. Dr. Funatani has provided critical and important programming support for numerous international conferences since 1992 including: the 1st international conference on Quenching & the Control of Distortion, the ASM Heat Treating Equipment and Processes conference, the ASM International Conference on Carburizing and Nitriding, and has Co-chaired the ASM-HTS 2000 Conference with Dr. Totten. He has served as a member of the HTS board from 1997 to 1999 and is an active member of IFHTSE. He also writes and edits many handbooks.
